Shelbyville, Ind. (September 10, 2025) – The City of Shelbyville is proud to announce that three community projects have been nominated for the 2025 Monumental Awards – People’s Choice Category, presented by Citizens Energy Group.

The Monumental Awards honor excellence in architecture, design, engineering, public art, and real estate development across Central Indiana. This year, more than 60 projects were submitted for consideration. Shelbyville’s three nominees represent the city’s commitment to innovation, community engagement, and regional impact.

  • Wortman Family Civic Theatre (Innovative Reuse) – A former bowling alley transformed into a 175-seat, eco-friendly cultural hub. The theatre provides youth programming, inclusive casting opportunities, and partnerships that drive local economic growth. Vote here

  • Bill Garrett Mural (Public Art) – Located in downtown Shelbyville, this mural by artist Pamela Bliss honors Bill Garrett, the first African American regular starter in Big Ten basketball. The artwork is a vibrant tribute to pride, progress, and Indiana history. Vote here

  • The Mill (Real Estate Development) – A 168-unit mixed-income housing development on the site of a former Coke bottling plant. The project features a renovated clubhouse, 4,000 square feet of retail space, and new residential opportunities that contribute to Shelbyville’s long-term growth. Vote here

Voting for the People’s Choice Award is open through Tuesday, September 23. Community members across the region are encouraged to support Shelbyville’s nominees by “liking” the photo of each project on Facebook.

“These nominations highlight Shelbyville’s momentum as we continue to invest in creativity, development, and community pride,” said Jenna Martin, Director of Public Relations. “We encourage residents and partners to vote and help showcase the progress happening in our city.”
