SHELBYVILLE, IN – The City of Shelbyville is closely monitoring rising river levels as heavy rain is expected this weekend. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) operates two river gauges in our area—one on the Big Blue River near River Road and another on the Little Blue River near the former National Guard building. These gauges help track water levels and predict potential flooding.

According to current forecasts, both rivers are in the Action Stage of flooding. By Saturday morning, minor flooding is expected, and by Saturday evening, the Big Blue River could reach moderate flood levels. The highest water levels are expected early Sunday morning, with the Big Blue River possibly reaching 17.6 feet.

What This Means for Our Community

Flooding in Shelbyville usually begins around 11 feet, impacting low-lying areas such as Bear Chase Golf Course and Sunset Park. By 14 feet, some homes and businesses may see flooding. If the river reaches 18 feet, major flooding could occur, affecting many properties in town.

How to Stay Safe

City officials, emergency responders, and public works crews are prepared to respond as needed. Residents should take precautions and stay alert throughout the weekend.
