Handgun Permit Application

DocumentIn 2022, the State of Indiana passed legislation that empowered residents to carry a handgun without a permit.  In addition to this legislation, the State of Indiana had previously removed all fees associated with a 5 year permit as well as a lifetime permit.  There are however incentives to obtain a handgun permit, such as circumstances where residents may travel outside of the State of Indiana as other states may still require permits as part of their reciprocity laws.

Application Process

Do you have questions about how to obtain your handgun permit? Over the past few years, the process of obtaining a concealed weapon permit has changed. Here is a quick guide on how to get your application started.

  • Step 1: Complete the online Firearms Licensing application. At the end of the application, you will receive directions on how to schedule electronic fingerprinting (step 2) and payment of state fee.
  • Step 2: Schedule electronic fingerprinting through MorphoTrust, by calling 877-472-6917 or visiting the IdentoGO website.
  • Step 3: Bring your application number, drivers license, and fingerprint receipt to your local law enforcement agency for approval. Effective July 1st 2021, there are no longer any local fees to be paid.
  • Step 4: Your application will be electronically transferred to the Indiana State Police for final approval. If your application is approved, your permit will be sent to you via U.S. Mail. If your application is rejected, you will be notified via U.S. Mail and will receive instructions on how to file an appeal.

We encourage you to visit the Indiana State Firearms Licensing website website and review their frequently asked questions. Applicants may also check the status of pending applications by visiting their site.
